FX Replay vs MarketByOrder: Futures Backtesting on Tick Data

FX Replay is backtesting software built around a journal: replay a chart, take trades, then tag and review them, with a prop firm simulator to run your strategy under challenge rules. Its charts are TradingView's, and the replay steps through candles, the same as TradingView bar replay.

MarketByOrder is tick replay for futures. It plays back every trade and every change to the order book, tick by tick. You backtest by trading it: a footprint chart and a DOM fill in as the session plays, and your orders fill against the trades that actually happened. Try up to 3 replays a day with 5 minutes of total replay time free.

A Backtest Is Only as Good as Its Fills

Which came first, the target or the stop?

A short futures trade, say a 2 point target and a 1 point stop on ES, often fits inside a single candle. The candle records the highest and lowest price, not the order they came in, so a replay built on candles has to decide which one you hit. FX Replay's seconds data on Pro shrinks that window to one second. It doesn't remove it.

TargetEntryStopOne minute barThe trades inside itstopped outtoo late
The bar reaches both the target and the stop, so a bar backtest has to guess. The trades show the stop was hit first.

MarketByOrder checks your target and stop after every trade, so the result is whichever price actually traded first.

When does a limit order fill?

A candle that touches your buy limit doesn't mean you were filled. In a real market you join the back of the queue at that price, and a touch often trades the orders ahead of you and leaves yours resting.

In MarketByOrder a buy limit fills only when the offer comes down to your price, meaning every bid resting there has traded or been pulled. Stops trigger on a trade at or through the price, then fill at the bid or ask at that moment, so a fast market costs you a tick or two, as it would live. How to backtest order flow on tick data walks through each rule.

Footprint, DOM and Time & Sales

FX Replay's site doesn't mention an order book, a DOM or a footprint chart. Its replay shows candles and the indicators you put on them.

MarketByOrder replays the data underneath the candle. The footprint chart shows volume at each price on the side the exchange reported. The DOM shows the size resting at each price and where it is being added or pulled, and you can place orders straight from it. Time & sales lists every print.

Both have a script editor. FX Replay's FXR Script builds indicators from its candles. MarketByOrder scripts are TypeScript and can read every trade and the order book, and the script API docs list everything they can read.

Futures Data and Price

FX Replay's free plan has no futures data, and Intermediate ($17.99/mo) gets standard market data only. CME futures need Pro, at $35/mo or $350 a year.

MarketByOrder is futures first. Every plan, free included, replays ES, NQ, CL, GC and the other CME markets. Pro is $14/mo for unlimited replay time.

Where FX Replay Is Ahead

If your strategy is read from candles and you want a journal around it, FX Replay is built for that. If your entries come from the order flow and you need fills you can trust on a 2 point trade, that is what MarketByOrder replays.
